Reader’s Question:
What vehicles does auto insurance company usually cover?

An auto insurance company will provide cover for whatever vehicle is applied for. When you hear the words “car insurance,” it usually means protection for any person who operates a vehicle. The vehicle, or motor vehicle, need not be a car. You heard that right. In the insurance business, a motor vehicle includes, among others, a truck, automobile, or even a motorcycle.
Believe it or not, there are even insurance companies that will cover ATVs or all terrain vehicles and jet skis. Some go as far as insuring boats. It actually makes sense since all of the vehicles I mentioned are motor operated. Did you know that there are now companies that will provide coverage for a seaway? You know, that scooter looking thing.
So why do the rates differ? Well a lot of auto insurance company assign certain risks to certain types of vehicles. If you insure a sports car for example, you are likely to pay a higher premium since it carries a higher risk compared to, say, an old car. A motorcycle may have a higher rate if you don’t have special training for it.
The premiums assigned to motor vehicles will also differ on whose driving it. Adults get relatively lower rates compared to young drivers. Again, this is a matter of risk. Younger drivers are said to carry higher risks since they are more prone to indecision.
Usage is also another factor. Will you be using the car for personal use or for business use? It is important to know. Insurance companies have different companies for individuals or companies.
By now you should have learned that when you say car insurance, it is not limited to cars. If you’re not sure if your motor vehicle will be covered, ask an agent. They, of all people, are sure to know which auto insurance company will insure it.
